The Radiance Project

> Pierce Church Music Ministry

The Album

This is a collection of songs written by a little group of friends in the summer of 2023 for Pierce Church in Upland, IN.

We wrote on Wednesday nights, gathered in a living room, sharing food and scripture – one song each week, one song for each chapter of the book of Hebrews.

These songs represent our own increased awareness of the radiance of Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. We hope these songs can become a window for you as well, into the beauty and generosity of Jesus as we see it in the book of Hebrews.

The Songs

Sweeter than honey, richer than gold
Brighter than sunlight, the heavens unfold

Day after day, night after night
Your words are the way, the truth and the light

How generous, how kind
You spoke your word over us
In the scripture in the skies
And if that weren’t enough
The Word, he dwells among us
The Word, he dwells among us
And he is, he is, he is,
Radiant, radiant.

May my words, may my thoughts
May all the music of my heart
Please you, Lord my God
My Rock and my Redeemer.

Hebrews 1:1-3

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

We have seen your wonders, we have felt your grace,
We have seen your power and we have looked away,
We have been distracted, but you have never changed,
We lift our eyes again.

We see Jesus who suffered, the humble, compassionate
Jesus, the victor, the champion who conquered death
Jesus, God with us, the firstborn from grave into life
We see our brother, We see Jesus Christ.

We’ve been bowed by trouble, fear clouds every day.
Our sin and darkened thoughts have burdened us with shame.
But you have gone before us, you know the shadowed way,
So we fix our eyes again.

We will soon be like you, you’ll greet us from the shore
Face to face behold you, never wanting more
Though sorrow was the doorway, joy will lead us forward
With eyes wide open.

Hebrews 2:9-11

But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.

May the walls be steadfast, may the light through windows stream
May the bedrooms shelter, may the halls with laughter ring

May the door be open, may the porch be cool and wide
May the threshold welcome wanderers to step inside

Listen, can you hear him?
He is singing as he’s working
singing blessing, over his building
Over his house of rest
He’s building a house of rest

May the table lengthen, may the guests be lingering
May the conversation satisfy the hungering

We are the house, we are the house, the house he is building.

Hebrews 3:1-6

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus … He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful  as a servant in all God’s house,” …

But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

We come from a family of wrestlers and wanderers
Who walked through the ocean and crossed the sand-sea
They hungered and thirsted; forgot about God.
In the struggles of life, so have we.
The desert around us is twisted and tortured
With hot shifting sands that will swallow us down.
The pillar of fire, the pillar of cloud
Calls out for us all to come home.

Lay down your burden,
Lay down your head,
Lay down your life and
Listen, Listen.

We search for our comfort in piles of dust
But the Word of the Father now sends forth his song.
For he is our Rock and our Steady Companion
And his rest is the place we belong.
Stop marching through deserts with sweat in your eyes
On feet that are weary and bruised to the bone
Reach out and take hold of his promise of peace
For his mercy and grace call you home.

We come from a family of wrestlers and wanderers
Who walked through the ocean and crossed the sand sea
We hunger and thirst; forget about God.
But he calls to us all to be free.

Hebrews 4:9-11

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

We fix our eyes on Jesus,
We fix our eyes on Him,
We fix our eyes on Jesus,
We fix our eyes on Him.

Humble as he serves each one
Compassionate in all he does
Chosen by the Father
Our defender
Advocates for us in love
Forgiver of the guilty one
Our eternal priest
The author of our peace

Jesus, Jesus, how I love Him,
How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus,
Oh, for grace to trust Him more.

Hebrews 5:7-10

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Have the currents and the wind
Carried us far from shore?
Is the harbor far away
Is our little boat tired and worn?

Over the water, over the waves
We hear the voice of Jesus say:

I am, I am
the anchor for your souls
Take your courage
I promise you
The anchor holds.

Have we been out here for so long
We’ve forgotten the green shores?
He draws us there from up ahead
He’s gone on before.

Press on, brother,
Keep hope, sister,
He’s pulling us toward home
We’re gonna make it home.

Hebrews 6:19-20

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.

Ages past there stood a man
In a field with Abraham
They said he was a Priest of God
Here to offer peace
He had no family ties to claim
Chosen not because of name
No beginning and no end
But He gave two things to Abraham.

Put a blessing on his head
Gave him gifts of wine and bread
The gifts were good but incomplete
A foretaste of a better feast.

The story echoes down through time
There came a second priestly line
Jesus is the chosen one
Here to offer peace
He had no family ties to claim
Chosen not because of name
No beginning and no end
But He gives to the children of Abraham.

A blessing and some bread to eat
The gift is given now complete
For He’s the blessing, He’s the bread
The giver and the gift.

What a marvelous mystery
With the Father sits our priest
Truly He meets every need
Jesus is our peace.
The blessing He will not rescind
The bread will never have an end
For He will bring us home to be
With him eternally.

Hebrews 7:23-27

… because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

No more (No more) no more (No more)
I’ll remember your sins no more
Peace abounds like never before
I’ll remember your sins no more

There at the right hand of glory
The man who came to save.
A priest of eternal salvation,
Through him, our debt is paid.

We no longer have need for the tablets of stone
Nor the blood of sacrifice
Carved upon our hearts, the Law
Fulfilled with the blood of Christ.

There will come a day, oh glory
The tongue of every man
Will proclaim the name of our King Jesus
And taste his bread and wine.

Hebrews 8:10-12

This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

One day, we were trying to be right
We were doing all we could just to be saved
We said, “we can keep our death away,
With our offerings put off our dying day”
And the smoke would fill the golden room
And the offering would be consumed
And the priest would put a band-aid on the mortal wound

Over and over
Our guilt came back around
Our guilt came back around

One day when we could not get it right
The love of God came down to give himself to save
He said, “I will take your guilt away,
I will carry in my body all your shame
And he tore the veil to the golden room
And he broke the power of the tomb
And the priest of God forever has healed every wound

Now It’s over
A new thing’s coming round
A new thing’s coming round

What grace, oh, how terrible the price
For us and our salvation he did pay
He says “I have made a brand new way
Draw near to me and do not be afraid”
And today He sits in the golden room
And his spirit’s filling me and you
And this is our inheritance, a life renewed

The sky is open
Heaven has come down
Heaven has come down

One day he’ll return in brilliant light
He will carry his beloved all away
He’ll say “It’s your resurrection day,
That where I am forever you may stay

Hebrews 9:11-12

But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

Jesus, our savior, hung on a cross all alone
He suffered and died for our sin and he counted it joy
Dying, he sealed all our death in a tomb,
And rising, he opened the way to a heavenly home.

Now he says
Draw near,
draw near, to me

The veil of his body and the veil of the temple are torn
For He is temple and he is the living door
He welcomes us into what’s truly our home
Being with Jesus forever is what we’re made for.

Don’t turn your back on the promises that He’s made
Come near to Jesus, come and sit close and stay
Extravagant mercy Unthinkable grace
This treasure is precious, so hold to the courage of faith

There’s no better place
no better place, no better place you could be than to

Draw near,
Draw near, to me

Hebrews 10:19-23

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

They trusted what they could not see
Had peace in the mystery
Hope is what held them in the unknown
And the same hope is holding me

Glory, hallelujah,
Faith is the victory
Glory, hallelujah,
Jesus Is leading us to
Glory, hallelujah,
Faith is the victory
Glory, hallelujah
Jesus Is leading us to
Glory, glory, glory
Faith is the victory

Abraham left without a place
Moses asked to see your face
Isaac stretched his hands to bless
By faith, by faith
The walls they fell, the sea restrained
The blood applied, the firstborn saved
The people took the promise made
By faith, by faith
The sick were healed, the dead were raised
The prophets died but overcame
They were bound for a better place
By faith, by faith
With them we will watch and wait
Believing in the promised day
When faith is sight and we are changed
By faith, by faith

Hebrews 11:13-16

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Joy, you considered it joy.
The shame of the cross you defiantly scorned
At that moment of loss a curtain was torn.
For joy, you considered it joy.

First, you were born first.
Raised from the dead to the angel’s delight.
The giver and gift complete sacrifice.
First, you were born first.

We’ll turn to you.
The resilient Son of God whose love will endure
We’ll turn to you.
When our heart grows tired and worn, You’re strong and you’re secure
We’ll turn to you.
We’ll turn to you

Fire, consuming fire.
Power in your voice shakes heaven and earth.
Blood that you shed speaks a better word.
Fire, consuming fire.

So let us run the race,
Follow the path of saints
Leave the past snares behind,
Trust that you’re by our side.
Strengthen these feeble arms.
Sustain these weakened knees.
Teach us to tend the path,
Making a way for peace.

Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Ain’t no temple on the hill
No altar made of gold
No remaining sacrifice
Of the covenant of old

The Lord came to us in the flesh
To pour out his own blood
He gives to us from nail-pierced hands
The abundance of his love

So we yearn, sinners one and all
So we turn, sanctified once for all
To the precious flow of the saving blood
Of the King of kings of the Kingdom come

Praise Him (Praise Him) Praise Him (Praise Him)
Living God of Grace
We fix our eyes on Jesus Christ
Sing His holy name

He takes us to the ones who mourn
We go where Jesus does
May we suffer with the sick
filled with Jesus’ love

He brings the stranger to our door
For us to welcome in
He carries us to those in need
To them We carry Him

Yesterday, today, tomorrow
He is the same

Find us humble, full of faith
Find us loving well
For we are only by His grace
The place he wants to dwell

Hebrews 13:20-21

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
