Proposed Transition to Single Board Structure
Pierce Church currently functions according to the traditional model of leadership found in United Methodist Churches. This includes separate Finance, Staff-Parish Relations, Trustees, and Nominating Committees that work together under the guidance of an Administrative Council. Since this summer, the Administrative Council at Pierce has explored the possibility of moving to a Single Board structure, a model supported by the UMC Book of Discipline that helps streamline decisions, clarify vision, and empower the church for ministry.
Rather than trying to coordinate five different decision-making committees, the Single Board model consolidates the Finance, Staff-Parish, and Trustees Committees into one single Leadership Board appointed by an independent Nominating Committee. As needed, the board will create and empower specialized working committees to help support the ministry of the church (i.e a building committee, mission committee, etc.), while retaining authority to make final decisions regarding annual budgets, financial controls, legal liabilities, administrative policies, and facility use. To be clear, all current committees would be dissolved, and the Nominating Committee would offer a fresh slate of nine leaders to make up this new Leadership Board.
The Administrative Council has proposed that we transition to this leadership model beginning January 1, 2021, pending the approval of a special-called Charge Conference on December 15th.
Below, you will find a exploration document about the transition to a single board structure, along with formal Organizing Documents that would be voted on at the special-called Charge Conference. If you have any questions and/or concerns, please contact Pastor Evan at evan.guse@piercechurch.org. Also, Pastor Evan will be a hosting a special Q&A session via Zoom on December 2nd at 6:30pm for those who would like more detailed information.
